Math Book Monday - Circus Shapes

I made it back again this week! Today's math book is part of the MathStart series by Stuart J. Murphy. I love all of his books and have quite a few of them in my collection. This is one is called Circus Shapes and it's all about 2-D shapes!

It's a fun rhyming story that goes through the four main 2-D shapes: circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. There's even a fun counting page to find all the shapes!

The nice thing about the MathStart series is all the books have a page of ideas to go with it. Perfect for home or school!

You could put this book in a centre and have students hunt for the shapes. They can keep track of how many shapes they find on the page or in the entire book using tally marks on the table below. (Click the picture for your free copy.)

Also, this book goes great with my 2-D Shape freebie on TeachersPayTeachers. It is one of my most popular freebies and has every 2-D shape you could possibly want! Click the picture below to check it out if you haven't downloaded it yet!

Thanks for stopping by for today's Math Book Monday!

Also, don't forget to stop by iTeach First to enter the Teacher Appreciation giveaway! You can win one of four $25 gift cards to either Target, Starbucks, Amazon, or TeachersPayTeachers! Click the picture below and go enter the Rafflecopter for your chance to win!

If You Give a Teacher a GIft Card... iTeach First Giveaway

I cannot believe that it is almost the end of April! The end of the school year is fast approaching and I bet everyone's minds are racing with all the things you still need to do and teach and finish before summer break.

Well, I have just the thing to take your mind off your ever-growing to do list... How about a gift card to one of your favourite places? Our collaborative blog iTeach First is having a giveaway to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. If you head over to the blog and enter the Rafflecopter, you can win one of four $25 gift cards to Target, Starbucks, Amazon, or TeachersPayTeachers. The contest will run from today until May 2nd. Four lucky winners will be announced on May 3rd! Click below to go enter!

Some of my fellow iTeach First bloggers and I have decided to share with you what we would buy if we were to win these awesome gift cards!

If you give a teacher a gift card, she'll want to buy some books. When she goes to order the books, her husband will tell her she already bought some books this week. So she'll think of what else she could spend her gift card on...

How about a Vanilla Bean Crème Frappuccino® Blended Beverage or Teavana® Shaken Iced Passion Tango Tea Lemonade from Starbucks? Yum!

Or maybe some laminating pouches or a pack of 100 dice from Amazon? Yipee!

I can't talk about Target. It's just too sad. Read why here.

But I do love TpT!! I've got a few things sitting on my wishlist that I would love to have. Maybe a Hello Fonts commercial font license by Jen Jones? Or some Nonfiction Easy Readers by Tara West? And you can never go wrong with more MelonHeadz clipart!

What would you buy if you won any of these gift cards? But remember, you can't win unless you go enter! Click the button below to enter. Good luck! :)

Second Grade Interactive Science Journals

This post is for all my Grade 2 friends! I absolutely love my Interactive Science Journals and I have gotten back so much great feedback from them! I had a few requests to make a second grade edition, so that is what I have been working on!

In Manitoba, the Grade 2 Science curriculum is divided into four clusters. They are:

1. Growth and Changes in Animals
2. Solids, Liquids, and Gases
3. Position and Motion
4. Air and Water in the Environment

Even though these units are designed with the Manitoba Science curriculum in mind, the lesson activities and journal pages can be used by anyone in any province or territory or state!

These units are designed the same way as my first grade units. For each outcome in the cluster/unit, there are lesson plan ideas and pictures, lesson materials (for whole group charts, sorts, etc.), and interactive science journal pages. These pages are designed to fit an 8-1/2x10" spiral journal, but you can easily shrink the pages or print two-to-a-page if you are using smaller journals.

The first unit is all about life cycles and animals!

These are the lessons/outcomes covered in this unit:

1. Unit title page
2. Write and illustrate important unit vocabulary
3. Compare constant and changing characteristics of humans
4. Graph heights of students to recognize how humans grow at different rates
5. Test how different drinks affect a plant's growth (science experiment)

6. Sort food into the four food groups
7. Plan a menu for a day based on Canada's Food Guide
8. Sort food that comes from plants or animals
9. Match adult animals to their offspring
10. Compare characteristics of a tadpole and frog
11. Compare the life span of various living things

12. Compare constant and changing characteristics of a chicken
13. Sort animals based on where they live, their skin covering, when they are awake, and/or what they eat

14. Describe how some animals take care of their offspring
15. Describe the life cycle of a frog, a butterfly, a chicken, a ladybug, a snake, and/or a horse
16. Compare life cycles of animals that have similar life cycles and different life cycles
17. Research an animal's life processes (eating, moving, sleeping, and breathing)
18. Design a poster about an endangered animal that describes the animal and ways we can protect it (design process)

And here is the second unit about the states of matter:

These are the lessons/outcomes covered in this unit:

1. Unit title page
2. Write and illustrate important unit vocabulary
3. Sort liquids and solids
4. Describe the properties of solids and give examples

5. Describe the properties of liquids and give examples
6. Compare and contrast the properties of liquids and solids
7. Test which solids dissolve in water and which don't (science experiment)
8. Test how different solids and liquids interact with each other
9. Match liquids we use at home to how we use them
10. Test different materials to see which is the most absorbent

11. Describe what happens when certain solids and liquids are combined
12. Recognize that air is all around us
13. Describe some of the gases that make up air
14. Describe the properties of gases and give examples
15. Explore how water changes states

16. Compare how solids and liquids can change states or remain the same in different circumstances
17. Describe how to safely dispose of solids and liquids
18. Test objects to see if the sink or float
19. Describe how to make a sinking object float and a floating object sink
20. Design a boat to hold a certain weight (design process)

You can also save money by buying the bundle. You will get all four units at a discounted price! Right now it only contains the first two units, but the third unit will be added by the end of May and the fourth unit by the end of June!

Math Book Monday - Ten Little Pirates

I almost didn't make it here tonight! I've had a cranky, teething baby who just wanted to cuddle all day and I'm watching the Winnipeg Jets first play-off game at home as we speak, so I'm going to make this quick! :) It's time for Math Book Monday!

Today's cute book is a counting to ten book called "Ten Little Pirates" by Mike Brownlow and Simon Rickerty. Click the picture to check it out on Amazon!

I love the illustrations of the adorable little pirates in this book. One by one, all the pirates disappear to count backwards from ten, but then they all reappear to count forwards again!

I thought this book would be a great lead in for a making ten activity. I  made a fun pirate freebie for you. Click any of the pictures below to check it out at TpT.

Also, I made a few other pirate math games last year. Check them out {here}! That's it for me today!! Go Jets Go! :)

Math Book Monday - Skip Counting Books with Freebies

I'm back today with Math Book Monday!

Today I am going to share three books with you. These three skip counting books are all written by Michael Dahl. They practice skip counting by 10s, 5s, and 2s You can click the pictures to check them out on Amazon:

I love these books because the text is simple, they practice an important first grade math skill (skip counting), and each page keeps track of the counting with numbers and dots! Also, each page has the number hidden somewhere on it. How fun and engaging while you read aloud! Students are practicing recognizing numbers as they search the page for it!

I created a fun math centre to go along with each book. Students put the number cards in order, then write the numbers on their recording sheet! Check them out by clicking the pictures:

Thanks for stopping by! Don't forget I am over at iTeach First today as well for Monday Make-It. I show you how to make grassheads with your students!
